When your goal is to move into a home that can support a home-based business, you usually need to upsize. Along with having suitable living space, you’ll need room for your company operations.

Exactly what you’ll need depends on your business type. Some home-based businesses only need office space. Others may require room for storing products, a separate entrance for customer visits, or room in the garage for a delivery vehicle.

Spend time reflecting on your personal and professional needs. Then, create a list of must-haves and nice-to-haves. With those lists, you’ll be able to target the right type of houses, streamlining the entire process.

As you begin to search, focus on properties that have more than the space you need today. That way, you have space to grow business when that time arrives.

Additionally, consider casting a wide net. By researching housing markets in more areas, you may find an option that gets you all of the house you need for less. Resources like Zillow, the National Association of Realtors (NAR), and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) are all great places to explore housing market data, helping you to identify opportunities with greater ease.

Setting up a business isn’t as hard as it may seem. Usually, your first step is to choose a business structure, such as an LLC. Once you’ve done that, there is paperwork to file, allowing you to obtain the right to operate in your area and to secure your company name.

In some cases, you may also want to set up a DBA name, which allows you to separate different aspects of your business – such as individual product lines – from one another. Plus, if your preferred domain name or social media handle isn’t available for your main company name, you may be able to get them for your DBA name, simplifying your advertising.

Speaking of advertising, one of the first tasks you’ll want to check off is creating a logo. A distinctive, professional-looking logo is essential when it comes to brand identity and instant recognition, so plan a design that best represents your messaging. Exactly when you should launch your business may depend on whether you’re moving to a new municipality or state. Manage Your Move

Once you have a new home in sight, it’s time to tackle your move. If you want to simplify getting your business off of the ground once you arrive, make sure you box those items together and label the containers. That way, you can find your supplies quickly, ensuring you can start operating as fast as possible.

Just make sure that any potentially delicate items are packaged carefully. Haphazard packing might increase your odds of breakage, so it’s best to be cautious when dealing with fragile property.

Additionally, even if you’re using a moving company for your household goods, you may want to keep your critical company items with you. That way, you don’t have to worry about moving delays hindering your business and reduce the odds of having to deal with unexpected damage or missing items.
